lake history

Harry Hanford Horton

My maternal grandfather purchased, from three different people, bits of property that came together in a tiny, wetland valley. He then cleared the area of decaying trees, dug out the land for depth, and built a small dam at one end, letting the natural springs fill up the area.
He would travel to the St. Lawrence River to catch fish that he brought back and put into the newly created lake. In 1959, Beaver Lake first opened for public fishing and has been open every year since. Harry died in 1968, leaving his wife,  Marion Marguerite Horton and eldest daughter, Belle Horton to tend to the lake and business. Belle became the sole guardian of the lake in 1985 when my grandmother passed away. When Belle passed on in 2005, my parents, sister, and I took over with my sister running the fishing and camping business and the rest of us attempting to take care of the surrounding area.
